FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is skin of color?

The United States is quickly becoming a country in which the majority of citizens no longer have white skin, but rather have pigmented skin, which is also referred to as skin of color. People with skin of color are of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and include African Americans, Asians, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders primarily, as well as individuals from mixed backgrounds.

What are the unique challanges of treating skin of color?

White skin and skin of color are similar in some ways but different in others. For example, skin of color is much less likely to get skin cancer than white skin. However, pigmentation problems, such as hypopigmentation, which involves patches of skin becoming lighter than the surrounding skin, and hyperpigmentation, which involves patches of skin becoming darker than the surrounding skin, are much more common in people with skin of color. These conditions are more visible in patients with darker skin tones and can negatively affect patients’ quality of life. Similarly, acne looks and heals differently in skin of color, and some hair issues that affect African Americans and Hispanics rarely affect whites.

How does it work?

First, you should look through the Conditions We Treat section to see if we are able to treat what is bothering you. We hope to expand our capabilities in the future, but at the moment we are limited to those problems. Additionally, we are only treating adult patients located in New York and Florida at this time.

If we are able to treat your problem and you want to move forward, next go to the Get Started section and complete the New Patient Consultation. This is a completely free, no commitment inquiry. Your information is kept totally private and will only be reviewed by our collaborating dermatology team. Allow up to 48 hours for a response. Please be patient, they strive to be thorough and give every case the attention it deserves.

If the dermatology provider is able to treat you, they will send your prescription to a pharmacy of your choice, where you can pick up medications at your convenience.

For a variety of reasons, they are not able to treat every patient that makes an inquiry. We apologize in advance that we cannot provide detailed explanations if this is the case. The decision to treat or not treat is in the sole discretion of the dermatology provider and My Skin of Color has no control over that decision.

What does My Skin of Color offer you?

In many places, skin of color patients do not have access to high quality, dermatologic care. Most live in communities without dermatology providers who have expertise treating pigmented skin. They may feel embarrassed to bring up their concerns because they are afraid they won’t be taken seriously.

At My Skin of Color, you can get treatment for many skin conditions from the comfort and privacy of your home. We will connect you to an expert dermatology provider who, if appropriate, will send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice. No waiting rooms. No beating around the bush. Treatment on your terms. It’s that easy.

Who can participate?

We are currently treating adult (18+) patients located in New York state and Florida, but hope to expand to other states in the near future. You will required to provide proof of your eligibility to submit your New Patient Consultation.

How much does it cost?

Affordability is one of core values. We charge a flat $69 for our service. You will only be charged if we can help you. We regret that we do not accept insurance; keeping a low overhead is essential to being able to provide our service to the most people. Importantly, this fee is only for the diagnosis and prescription management; the cost of the medication is separate.

You can pay for the medication with your insurance if you would like or you can pay in cash. If you choose to list your insurance, providers will try to prescribe you medications that will likely be covered, resulting in little or no out of pocket cost. Note, your prescription does not include refills. You will need to do a follow up to obtain a refill.

What if I don't have insurance or want to pay cash- can I afford the medication?

Yes! Many people do not have insurance or have not so great insurance with a high prescription drug deductibles or copay. We work with a variety of specialty pharmacies to get you the most rock bottom cash price on the medications we prescribe.

How do refills work?

You will need a follow up evaluation found under the Getting Started tab before any refills can be processed. We charge a flat $39 for the follow up and providers will process your refill, if appropriate, within 48 hours. Some medications that our providers prescribe cannot be used indefinitely. You will only pay if they are able to refill the medication.

How is My Skin of Color different than other online health platforms?

Your case will only be reviewed by expert dermatology providers, who have expertise and passion for treating these conditions. By staying focused on our fundamentals, we are able to provide high-quality dermatologic care to our patients. Additionally, many other online health platforms want to lock you into a subscription model for your medication and up-charge you at every opportunity. Our collaborating providers will send your medications to whatever pharmacy you want and you can pay cash or use your insurance. We will always be transparent about pricing and what we can and cannot do for you.

Can I chat with the provider? How do I ask questions?

We will send you detailed information about your condition and the prescriptions we use to treat it, possible side effects of the medications, and how long it will take to see improvement. If your questions are not answered there, you can ask them at patients@myskinofcolor.com. Please be patient and they will try to answer them as quickly as possible.
